BRICKLINK DESIGNER PROGRAM · 2028 WAVE 1

Transformable Railway Yard

The second chapter of a railway project designed to transform.

Transformable Railway Yard in its open configuration

With Transformable Railway Yard, I am returning to the BrickLink Designer Program for 2028 Wave 1, revisiting a project I never truly considered finished.

The small industrial locomotive submitted to Series 11 was the starting point. This time, however, I did not simply want to add a few more details. I wanted to turn that idea into a more complete, more functional railway scene — and, above all, one capable of changing configuration.

A Diorama That Transforms

The opening structure is at the heart of the project. In its compact configuration, the two modules form a single diorama that is easy to display. Once opened, the scene extends lengthwise and becomes a complete industrial railway section, with the train, maintenance building, signal and service elements distributed along the track.

This is not merely a visual trick. The transformation allows the model to work in two different ways: as a compact display piece and as a small railway environment that can be explored and used along its entire length.

A Small Railway Story

The scene represents an industrial service area. The Sogliola works alongside a maintenance building, while the wagons carry materials and equipment. The flat wagon with its large coils directly recalls the first project; around it, minifigures, vegetation, signalling and technical details give the model context and a story.

I wanted every element to serve both a narrative and a structural purpose: not a static backdrop, but a place where the train appears to be genuinely at work.

Motorization Hidden Inside the Train

The technical side remains central. The locomotive is designed for motorization, and the Powered Up system is integrated without turning the project into a mere container for electronics.

The hub is housed inside the first freight wagon. Its side doors provide access to the technical compartment, while the connection to the locomotive allows the train to actually move along the track. This keeps the Sogliola compact and turns the power system into part of the rolling stock itself.

Motorization is optional and the electronic components are not included in the project, but the structure was designed from the beginning to accommodate them. For me, it was important that the model could look good on display while still behaving like a real railway model.

From the First Chapter to a More Ambitious Project

Transformable Railway Yard retains the visual language of the original project — the small locomotive, the industrial atmosphere and the visible mechanics — but takes it in a more mature direction. The transformation, the motorization-ready train and the maintenance environment are not separate additions: they work together as one system.

This is exactly what I continue to look for when designing a MOC: a model that tells a story, reveals how it is built and invites you to discover one function after another.

The Sogliola was the first chapter. Transformable Railway Yard is the story continuing.
